nablopomo fail. reverb10 (and 2011) win?

November 30, 2010 at 10:20 am | Posted in NaBloPoMo, Thoughts | Leave a comment

nablopomo started off bad. i was what, five days late? but i gave it a solid effort. and i kinda like this attempting to post every day thing, even if i’m just posting the mundane details of my mundane life. it makes me think about a lot of things and i’ll be able to look back on these posts and see how i spent a lot of november 2010.

which is why i decided to participate in reverb10. “Reverb 10 is an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. The end of the year is an opportunity to reflect on what’s happened, and to send out reverberations for the year ahead.” basically, they will post prompts every day for participants to write about which will help them to reflect on their 2010. i’m really looking forward to this. 2010 has been a pretty good year when all is said and done. there were highs and lows but the highs were pretty high and the lows weren’t really that low (*knock on wood*). i hope this trend continues into 2011. some main things that i want to be different about 2011:

– i want to allow myself to be happy. every time i give this a shot, something happens and sends me into one of those low lows i mentioned before. when things are going well, i’m always on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the rug to be pulled out from under me. on one hand, i’m half-prepared for the worst at all times. on the other hand, i don’t allow myself to enjoy when things are going well. hopefully, this new frame of mind will produce a different outcome. i admit it. i’m pretty happy right now and i’d like it to stay that way. i really hope i didn’t just jinx myself…
– i’m going to save more money than i spend. i recently started a savings account and i already have a decent amount in it. i know, i’m 29 years old and i’m just now starting a savings account? believe me, i’m with ya. but up until recently, i didn’t think i made enough to save anything. boy, was i wrong! with the new car (read: new car payments), it forced me to go over my finances and kind of create a mental budget. it made me realize that i spend money on really dumb shit. i’m no longer buying my lunch at work, i’m not going out as much as i used to and even though i’m putting a decent chunk of my paycheck into a different account so it’s out of sight and out of mind, i still have more money left over than i did before i was saving. wtf?
– i’m not going to the camo party in june. we’ll leave it at that.
– i’m going to be more proactive and make things happen. i’ve honestly kinda coasted through life, all but giving up when things seemed difficult. not in all situations but definitely during the really hard times. this is changing. how can you expect things to change if you aren’t willing to put the effort into changing them? well, i’m putting in more effort than i have in the past from now on. i’m crossing things off of that life list that i’ve created. i’m going to make things happen, however small or large those things may be.

just wait and see…

(and btw, i changed my mind about the fuggs. what was i thinking? we’ll call it a brief moment of insanity.)

ugh… and uggs.

the long thanksgiving weekend is over. sad face. it was a great one too, filled with things to do but also surprisingly relaxing.

my sister and i figured out her cell phone issue. thanksgiving was yummy, as usual. the key lime pie that i made was pretty good. everyone seemed to like it so i might have to try other recipes. cooking is becoming fun for me. finally. only took 29 years.

the pitt/wvu game was COLD!! bf and i were smart and parked at the casino for free (he has a black diamond card so i guess that means free parking during games?) and “tailgated” in there where it was warm. our seats were in the shade and up pretty high so the first half of the game, we were cold. we moved to a sunnier part of the stadium for the second half and it wasn’t quite as cold but pitt did not play well. we left a little after the fourth quarter began.

dinner at the georgetown inn wasn’t bad. probably not worth the price tag but it was good. i had meant to take some pictures of pittsburgh from mount washington after dinner but it was way too cold and windy to hang out outside for much longer than it took to walk back to the car.

the pens game went a lot better. they won 4 to 1 with crosby getting a hat trick. i got lots of compliments on my green crosby jersey. i guess people haven’t really seen it before. that’s what i was going for when i got it!

we went bowling saturday night. it was the first time i’ve been bowling in about two years and i did pretty well. i broke 100 points each game so… that’s good right?

sunday, was more stressful than necessary because, once again, the steelers forgot that football games have four quarters and decided to suck pretty hardcore towards the end of the game. suisham/sepulveda (nom x2) won that game for pittsburgh. and troy polamalu.

now, it’s monday. not only is it monday, but it’s the first day back after a long weekend and those are always the hardest. not to mention when i woke up this morning, my phone told me it was a mere 29 degrees outside. and i haven’t felt good since last night. put all of that together and what do you get? bleh. that’s about how i feel right now.

and now, a confession. i have been very anti-uggs for years. i’ll say it again; i’m not the most trendy person in the world. i’d like to be, but there are some things i just can’t get behind. uggs, skinny jeans, leggings (or worse, jeggings), jeans tucked into boots (although i’m starting to come around on that one), etc… and then, my brother and his girlfriend bought me these for my birthday:

seriously the most comfortable, warmest, softest things i have ever put my feet into. but yes, they are considered slippers and yes, as i type this blog at work, they are on my feet. i really have no shame.

except that i do. so, since dsw sent me a coupon for $25 off a purchase of $50 or more, i’m currently on their website looking for something similar and a tad more work appropriate. while it might not actually be uggs (holy $$$$ batman!), it may be something similar. i mean, they’re like a winter version of flipflops! you can wear them with almost anything! and we all know how i feel about my flipflops…

happy thanksgiving!!!

my key lime pie is a success!!! i haven’t tried the whole thing yet but the filling is pretty yummy and so is the topping. i’ll post the recipe in case someone that reads this might be curious. the only thing is, the crust is slightly burnt. the recipe says to bake the crust for 20 minutes. i only put it in for 18 minutes so i could check to make sure 20 minutes wasn’t too long before it started to burn and well… 20 minutes would have been way too long. here are some pictures!

these were taken with my iphone. i’m no food photographer or anything…

without topping

with topping

here’s the recipe:

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick butter) melted
2 (14-ounce) cans condensed milk
1 cup key lime or regular lime juice
2 whole eggs
1 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 tablespoon lime zest

Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

In a bowl, mix the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and butter with your hands. Press the mixture firmly into a 9-inch pie pan, and bake until brown, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature before filling.

Lower the oven temperature to 325 degrees F.

In a separate bowl, combine the condensed milk, lime juice, and eggs. Whisk until well blended and place the filling in the cooled pie shell. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes and allow to chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

Once chilled, combine the sour cream and powdered sugar and spread over the top of the pie using a spatula. Sprinkle the lime zest as a garnish on top of the sour cream and serve chilled.

thanksgiving break?

i have a pretty busy weekend ahead of me. i’m really looking forward to it though. bf is off, it’s thanksgiving (which means lots of yummy food!), and there’s lots going on.

immediately after work tonight, i’m meeting bf for a quick dinner before he has to work at 7. poor thing has to work from 7pm to 7am both tonight and tomorrow night. yes, on thanksgiving night. 😦 sucks…

my sister gets off work at 7 and i’m driving ~40 minutes to her neck of the woods to go bitch at verizon with her. there’s a $15 charge on her bill for a data download and neither of us have any clue what it’s for. and i’m a little more technologically savvy than she is so i’ll know what to ask and hopefully how to get the charge removed. and we all know how i feel about verizon after my blackberry debacle…

then… THEN… i’m making a key lime pie tonight. from scratch! check that one off the list! i went out sunday and bought all the ingredients and i’m really looking forward to giving this a try. my nephew is going to help too. he’s 2 years old but i told him he can crush up the graham crackers for the crust. i’m certain he’ll enjoy that because he is the king of destruction lately. he is going to be trouble in a couple years. last night, he was on the stairs at my house, his mom and i were telling him to be careful so he crouched down as low as his little 2 year old body could go and then threw himself down the stairs! we panicked, and then he looked up at me with the biggest grin on his face. what a butthead…

tomorrow, i’m helping my mom cook and clean all day. then stuffing my face around 7pm. i LOVE thanksgiving! it is my second favorite holiday. st patrick’s day is my first favorite, in case you didn’t know.

friday morning, i’m getting up pretty early. no, i’m not black friday shopping. trust me, it’s in everyone’s best interest that i am not out in crowded stores at 6am. 6am is meant for sleeping and if i’m doing anything but that at that hour, someone will die. just sayin… no, i’m getting up to tailgate for the backyard brawl! i bought these tickets for bf’s birthday in october and he’s really excited to go. sucks that it’s going to be 30 frickin degrees that day after a week of the temperature hovering around the 50 degree mark but… it is what it is. it’s been a while since i’ve been in heinz field and i’ve never been to a pitt football game so i’m really looking forward to it. that night after the game and after a sobering up disco nap, we’re going to dinner with a few of his friends at georgetown inn on mt washington. nom…

saturday, we have tickets to the pens/calgary game at consol energy center. it’ll be my first time in the new arena and my first pens game in a couple seasons. really looking forward to that and sporting my green crosby jersey!

sunday = recovery and watching a steeler game. ahhhh… so if i don’t post on here for a little bit, even though it’s nablapomo, that’s why. man, i’m tired after just writing this post. let the games begin…

my mom just called me. the auto auction people came and towed my old car away a few minutes ago. she says they were very nice and gentle with her. i am sad i wasn’t there to say goodbye. i will honestly miss her.

my christmas list for 2010… 2.0

November 23, 2010 at 10:31 am | Posted in NaBloPoMo, Random | Leave a comment

i had to go and screw everything up. i know you saw my christmas list for 2010 and were chomping at the bit to buy me a car. and then i went and bought one myself. completely ruined your plans, didn’t i? i know… I KNOW! but it’ll be okay. fear not, i’m compiling yet another list just for you! aren’t you happy? i know i am because lists are fun.

– yes, i still want my tiffany’s shamrock bracelet. if i don’t get it, maybe i’ll save up and get it for myself as a late birthday present. you know, since i’m so good at asking for stuff and then buying stuff myself! har.
portable gps navigation for my car. preferrably one with the option of downloading different voices to it. because i kinda want lil jon to direct me where to go (“hang a right…. OKAAAAAYY!!!”). i think you can do that with a garmin. or maybe it’s tomtom. either way, garmins appear to be cheaper and i think this commercial is hilarious.
a flip ultra hd camcorder since i’d like to start taking more video of things i do rather than just pictures.
– i’m expensive.
– gift cards to target. i love love LOVE target.
– (side note: what is this??? an ipod dock/alarm clock with a “bed shaker”??? sure… THAT is what it’s used for…)
this t-shirt.

that’s all i can think of for now. i’m sure i’ll update this as i think of things. what does your christmas list look like?

out with the old, in with the new-ish…

i didn’t post yesterday. again. in all fairness, i had a pretty stressful day. my mom wanted me to drive her to toys r us to look for a wagon for my nephew, and then we were going to go to the grocery store to buy some thanksgiving things. i wanted to get some ingredients because i plan on making a key lime pie for dessert! from scratch! i’ll be checking something off of my life list!

while discussing where we were going to go and what we were going to get, i stumbled upon an ad for a local kia dealership. the ad had one of those keys attached to it and if you take this key to the kia dealership and it unlocks a car, you win that car. since my car’s engine all but blew up the other day, i figured why not? free car!

well, long story short, i didn’t win the car. but i did win a $50 gift card to giant eagle and a powerball ticket. i gave both to my dad since it was his key after all. but… BUT… i came home with this:

my week of fail continues…

monday was alright. tuesday was awful. wednesday was almost as awful. thursday was alright. friday? really could go either way.

so far, i got up and got showered and ready just in time to run down a hill that looks like this:

and is this steep:

and i didn’t fall. AND i made it to the bus with plenty of time! AND i had enough change to actually get on the bus! AND the bus got me to work with time to spare! LOOK AT ME GO!

however… i forgot my camera. well, i didn’t actually forget my camera. i left it at home because i knew i would be running down that hill and if i ran down that hill with a very expensive piece of camera equipment anywhere on my person*, it would surely break. and i wanted to bring my camera because tonight is light up night.

i’ve never been to light up night but it will surely provide plenty of photo opportunities. i have my fujifilm point-and-shoot but i just don’t know if it will do. well, it will have to do since my nikon is at home, but… i’m sad.

and i don’t feel very well. hopefully that goes away before tonight.

* i don’t understand that phrase “on my person”. the camera would be on me not on my person. i don’t have a person walking around with me that i keep shit on. “excuse me, but where is your ladle?” “oh, it’s on my person right here.” someone explain this to me.

(update: my camera’s battery died so all i have is one picture and a short video on my phone. also, there was a riot and someone was shot downtown that night. ah… the joys of the holiday season!)

bad few days…

November 18, 2010 at 9:26 am | Posted in NaBloPoMo, Rants and Raves | Leave a comment

(i wrote this last night and apparently just saved it as a draft rather than post it. fail.)

this is how my week has gone:

tuesday
– email at work is down for close to two hours while literally everyone i work with is at a meeting that i was not invited to.
– finally get email up and running and see reprimanding message from “superior” asking me why i haven’t sent an email to a client. ummm… because i didn’t have email.
– micro-managed all day. i hate being micro-managed.
– skip the happy hour after work because i just want to go home and get ready for a friend’s surprise birthday dinner.
– car overheats on the way to the dinner. my car never overheats.
– wait in line for 20 minutes at kmart to buy coolant so i can get my car home. there were only 5 people in front of me, each with only one or two items to buy. slowest. checkout line. EVER!
– late to birthday dinner. miss the surprise.
– order nachos at birthday dinner that are supposed to be amazing. these nachos are not amazing. in fact, they are downright gross.
– car all but explodes on the way home due to more overheating. but i got it home.
– notice insane amounts of antifreeze on the dip stick when i randomly check it. not good.

wednesday
– call boss to tell him i’ll be a half hour late to work due to car issues (or lack of car issues).
– arrive at 9:30.
– more micro-managing. i promise i’m able to handle things on my own.
– reprimanded by boss for being late even though i called.
– dangerously close to bursting into tears all day long.
– lose in first round of dodgeball playoffs because once again, the referee we had was awful and the other team couldn’t have cheated more. after blantant hits to the chest and legs, they say “oh, that didn’t hit me” and the ref didn’t see it either. NO CLUE WHAT REF WAS LOOKING AT.
– engine is now completely full of antifreeze. i need a new engine. awesome.

drinking has never made me happier than it is right now. i realize i sound like an alcoholic, but i promise i’m not. it’s just keeping me sane today. softening the blow. bf is coming over. that and lots of sleep should help.

(update: it did. πŸ™‚ )
